English/Nat Guinea Bissau's government forces came under heavy attack from rebels on Sunday in some of the heaviest fighting since a military faction mutinied a month ago. The government forces have been backed up by troops from neighboring Senegal. Rumours that 1-thousand new Senegalese troops had been dispatched to the area inspired the rebel forces to launch their biggest offensive yet, attacking government forces in the north of the city. The fighting in Guinea Bissau began on June 7 with a coup attempt in the capital, Bissau, by former army chief of staff Brigadier Ansumane Mane, who accuses President Vieira of corruption and says he should resign. Various of women gathered in presidential compound to mourn his death 16. Various of soldier with rocket propelled grenade launcher standing guard on the road STORYLINE: Angola's vice foreign minister toured the rocket damaged house of Guinea-Bissau's assassinated president on Thursday. Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, who had ruled the tiny, coup-prone West African nation for two decades, was gunned down on Monday in front of his wife inside their villa in the capital Bissau. Later on Thursday an official from ECOWAS, a regional bloc of 15 African states, met with Vieira's widow. Vieira and his long-standing rival, the head of the armed forces, were both assassinated in back-to-back attacks beginning on Sunday night, when a bomb hidden underneath a staircase killed the army chief inside his office. His inner circle pointed the finger at Vieira and hours later, the president was assassinated. On Tuesday, head of Parliament Raimundo Pereira became the country's new interim president, quelling speculation the army had been planning a coup and marking a welcome continuation of democratic rule after the two killings shocked the nation. The military have blamed an "isolated group" of soldiers for Vieira's assassination and categorically denied the death was retribution for the killing a day earlier of Vieira's longtime rival, armed forces chief of staff General Batiste Tagme na Waie. The U.N. Security Council has condemned the assassinations and called on Guinea-Bissau's government to bring those responsible for the killings to justice. Guinea-Bissau has suffered multiple coups and attempted coups since 1980 when Vieira himself took power in one and now the former Portuguese colony is struggling to stem a booming cocaine trade. He was forced out 19 years later at the onset of the country's civil war, later returning from exile in Portugal to run in the country's 2005 election and win the vote. Vieira's death creates a dangerous opening in light of the country's appeal to cocaine smugglers. While demand for cocaine has levelled off in the U.S., it continues to rise in Europe, forcing Latin American drug cartels to aggressively seek new routes to smuggle cocaine to Europe. In recent years, they have begun flying small, twin-engine planes to Africa's West coast, where they land on deserted islands or on dirt runways and then parcel out the drugs to dozens of smugglers who ferry them north. The government estimates that as much as 1,750 pounds (800 kilogrammes) of the drug is transiting the country's borders each week, an amount worth billions of dollars per year. It's unclear how the assassinations of the two powerful figures will affect the drug trade, many however have long suspected that the army chief and the president were complicit in the trade. Heavy shelling from both sides has greatly damaged the Northern suburbs of the capital, Bissau, from which 300-thousand refugees have fled. But, despite the heavy pounding, the rebel troops are settling in to their positions and are ready, they say, to fight a long drawn-out war. Army rebels currently hold the airport to the north of the city and are reported to have MiG fighter planes. These are useless without special batteries, but it is claimed that such batteries have been supplied to the rebel forces, allegedly by Libya. The rebellion erupted on June 7 after President Vieira sacked the commander of the armed forces, Ansumane Mane, following accusations that senior army officers had been smuggling arms to Senegalese rebels. The Senegalese Government has been providing troops to the government forces, but they have yet to be effective against the rebels. SOUNDBITE: (Creole) "There is absolutely no way they can get through, we'll hit them hard..." SUPER CAPTION: Captain Jose Amerigo Bubo Na Tchuto, Rebel Frontline Commander Fleeing Government troops left large amounts of weaponry to the rebels including French made rocket propelled grenades. The fighting devastated the area, but left no great change in the frontline, which remains as it was on Saturday. Rebel troops claim that they are able to hold out for as long as it takes. Species assessed using this system have the following instead of Near Threatened and Least Concern categories: ---- The order Tubulidentata consists of a single species, the Aardvark. Tubulidentata are characterised by their teeth which lack a pulp cavity and form thin tubes which are continuously worn down and replaced. ---- The hyraxes are any of four species of fairly small, thickset, herbivorous mammals in the order Hyracoidea. Portu/French/Nat Government troops and rebels are reported to have exchanged heavy artillery fire in the capital of Guinea-Bissau on Friday, killing at least eight civilians. The Portuguese news agency Lusa says the victims died in artillery fire which also set fire to the city's central market. Bissau has been under sporadic attack since June 7, when a breakaway military faction occupied the city's main military garrison and the international airport where they are still entrenched. Rebel soldiers have stepped up their pressure against Senegalese troops, who have come to the aid of the beleaguered President of Guinea Bissau, Joao Bernardo Vieira. Hundreds of citizens have evacuated the area around the capital city, Bissau. Thousands have been displaced by fighting over the past month and a half, and there appears to be little sign of respite. For the residents who live in and around - day to day life has become an exercise in patience and fear. Anyone who claims loyalty to the government is now an enemy of the rebels. Soldiers from both sides of the conflict have been looting residential homes and businesses following the virtual desertion of neighbourhoods just outside Bissau. Despite the danger, one man has decided to stay in Bissau - given his large investment in a local business. SOUNDBITE: (French) "It's very dangerous but, you know, all of this has cost me a lot of money, and I have to stay here until the end of the war. If there is a bomb which destroys everything, then I'll go but..." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Lopes Vidigueirs, Portuguese businessman As the rebels move into new neighbourhoods of the capital there seems little hope of a peaceful solution. Tension fills the air in Bissau as sporadic shelling keeps civilians and soldiers on edge. Any passersby are regularly checked and harassed by soldiers like this man who is suspected of being a government collaborator. However, the spirit of revolution is in the air - and despite the deserted streets the people of Guinea Bissau are behind the soldiers who are fighting to free the nation of President Joao Bernardo Vieira. The soldiers also remain friendly with Bissau's Bishop - Dom Settimio Serrazzetta. He has been trying to woo the two sides into peace talks - but his efforts to date have been unsuccessful. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "The day that the military junta and the government decide to sit together and discuss a ceasefire our role in the church will be over." SUPERCAPTION: Bishop of Bissau, Dom Settimio Serrazzetta Both sides, however, seem reluctant to compromise. The rebels consist of numerous senior military officers who were formally loyal to the government but are now at odds with the president, who they accuse of corruption. They refuse to call a ceasefire or contemplate surrender and say they will fight on until they win. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "Every step of every day is a small victory. Every battle we win is a victory. We expect that in very little time our work will be over, we will reach Bissau." SUPERCAPTION: Colonel Vericino Correna Ceabna As in most wars - the heaviest price is paid by the civilian population. Thousands have been displaced by the fighting and an unknown number of people have died. A contact group has recently been set up to try and end the civil war. The group comprises of Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and the twin-island African state of Sao Tome and Principe. So far it has had no success in stopping the fighting.
